Q: I have seen a number of bottles of water containing vitamins in the supermarket. Should I buy these for my family?

A: The simple answer to your question is no. There are better ways for your family to get their vitamins. Foods based on Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide provide the best source of nutrients, but if you are concerned about your nutrient intake, a multivitamin, or mineral supplement is a cheaper alternative to these vitamin waters.

Vitamin waters, also called enhanced waters, are the latest fad to get people to drink more bottled water. They are simply flavoured water, some with sugar or artificial sweetener as well as vitamins and in some cases, herbal supplements added. They range from 0 to 100 calories per 591 mL bottle. They are marketed as an option for people who dislike the taste of plain water but want to drink something lower in calories other than pop or juice. However, at about $2 per 591 mL bottle, they are an expensive and inefficient way to get these vitamins.

Most of the vitamin-enhanced waters on the market have added B vitamins such as vitamins B3, B6 and B12, while others have additional vitamin C, pantothenic acid and vitamin E. The percentages of vitamins added range from 10 per cent of what an adult needs daily to 250 per cent. Whenever amounts exceed the recommended dietary allowance for vitamins, there may be a risk for toxicity.

The labels on these enhanced waters state a recommended dosage which is usually two bottles per day, except for those with lower nutrient levels, which recommend three to four bottles per day. The risk of toxicity from drinking vitamin waters is not high in the recommended dosages. The risk increases, particularly for children, when greater amounts are consumed and when vitamin waters are combined with vitamin supplements. In fact, these products are not recommended for children under the age of 18, but few of these products have caution statements on their label.

In addition to vitamins, some companies are also adding herbal supplements like ginseng, guarana, chamomile, and others. These additives provide no health benefits and are not suitable for children or pregnant women.

The bottom line is that the vitamins added to these enhanced waters are best obtained from food. A well balanced diet of whole grains, vegetables, fruits, low-fat dairy products, lean meats and alternatives like legumes will provide your family with all of the vitamins they need. There is no benefit in obtaining vitamins from bottled water and there may be potential harm. Plain water, on the other hand, is refreshing, healthy and safe to drink. Encourage your family to drink water, but think about using tap water instead to save our environment.

Those subjects who kept their anger inside experienced a decrease in immune system activity, but those who expressed their anger showed no chemical change in their bodies. Pent up anger is not the only kind of anger that is dangerous to your health, according to Duke University, students who had low hostility scores had one quarter less chances of having coronary heart disease then those who scored higher in hostility levels.

Those who response violently to stressful situations experienced biochemical changes that are just as destructive to the body and these violent reactions may elevate serotonin levels in the body. Studies with mice and serotonin levels showed that mice with higher levels of serotonin were more aggressive than those with lower levels; more studies need to be done to determine if upholstery cleaning respond in the same way but theoretically speaking serotonin can increase aggressiveness in humans as well. One study on students at Harvard Medical School that was going on for forty five years suggested that health and happiness in older age was directly related to how well those individuals got along with their parents while they were younger. Those students who had a stronger family relationship were happier forty five years later when the University followed up on how they were doing later in life.

Researchers suggest that individuals should reduce their stress levels, keep family relationships going strong and spend more time socializing with friends. Pent up anger can cause a lot of stress on a person and stress can cause health issues as well. Stress can cause all sorts of problems starting with migraines, headaches, digestive problems and memory loss. Depression from pent up anger will cause stress, upholstery cleaning santa monica in turn can disrupt sleep pattern s and eating habits further stressing the body. To combat stress and anger, exercise on a regular basis. Also, taking brief five minute breaks after someone made you angry to reflect and relax before continuing the day at work or home. Writing down your thoughts on paper can help release some of that pent up anger some researchers say.

If you work in a high stress job, taking supplements like a b complex can help restore the adrenal glands. Your adrenal glands produce the fight of flight hormones, continuous anger and stress will tax the adrenal glands and a b-complex vitamin can help restore those over worked adrenals naturally. Supplementing home furniture cleaning herbs such as St. john’s wort and kava kava can help reduce stress and anxiety. Excess stress and anger can lead to anxiety as well. Always consult your doctor if you have questions about herbal supplements and medication. Stop into your local health food store or shop online for supplements like St john’s wort, b-complex vitamins, or other stress supporting supplements.

Every so often a report is published that claims a miracle food has the potential to prevent cancer, halt heart disease or increase energy levels. Yet, research has consistently proved that a balanced diet and moderate physical activity is the best approach for the average healthy adult. People with special health situations should follow their doctor’s advice.

Why is a balanced diet always touted? Different foods contain different kinds of nutrients, such as protein, minerals, vitamins and carbohydrates. So a variety of foods should be eaten to provide all the nutrients the body needs to maintain good health.

There is a common misconception that only growing children need calcium. But adults also need calcium and vitamin D to protect bone heath during life. The body cannot make its own calcium. It can be supplied by eating calcium-rich foods.

Primary sources of calcium sources are milk, yogurt and cheese. Some people are lactose intolerant and have difficulty digesting milk products. They may ask their doctor about getting their calcium through nondairy calcium-rich foods, taking calcium/vitamin D supplements, using lactase pills or drops that make milk products digestible or drinking lactose-reduced milk.

Other foods that contain smaller amounts of calcium are meats, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs and nuts, sardines and salmon with bones, oyster and tofu made with calcium salt, deep leafy greens.

Vitamin D is necessary for the absorption of calcium. Vitamin D is found in fish, eggs, fortified milk, cod liver oil. The sun adds to the daily vitamin D production and 10 minutes of exposure may be enough to prevent deficiencies.

The Better Living for Texans food stamp nutrition program teaches adults and children how to eat for every stage of their lives. Better Living for Texans offers classes that focus on basic nutrition, food safety and smart grocery shopping. To schedule a class, contact the Texas AgriLife Extension office at 383-1026.

Sugar is addictive and is a low grade poison like any other addictive substance.
Refined sugar in particular provides only “empty” calories and lacks natural nutrients which are present at least in some degree in the whole sugar beet or whole sugar cane.

Such sugar is a refined and therefore incomplete carbohydrate. The body cannot utilize refined carbohydrate that has been depleted of all the proteins, vitamins and minerals that make a complete carbohydrate.

Eating sugar is worse than not eating anything because to digest, detoxify and eliminate it, the body tissues must give up precious vitamins and minerals which are vital to cellular health. Deficiencies occur and cells grow weak causing the tissues and organs they compose to become weak and your health to deteriorate.

Additionally, the body’s attempt to use incomplete carbohydrate results in the formation of toxic substances such as pyruvic acid and abnormal molecules containing five carbon atoms. Pyruvic acid accumulates in the brain and nervous system causing all manner of problems. The abnormal molecules accumulate in the red blood cells causing a different set of problems.

These toxic substances interfere with the respiration of the body’s cells. The cells cannot get sufficient oxygen to survive and to function normally. In time, some of the cells die off and are no longer replaced.
These permanent cell deaths leave missing areas that interfere with the function of parts of the body, its nervous system and organs and this is the beginning of degenerative disease.
Excess sugar of ANY kind swells the liver and is then changed to fatty acids and deposited as fat in areas of the body like belly and thighs etc. and finally in the vital organs which slow down and can’t function as they need to and the entire body is then severely effected with deteriorated function and health.

In addition to these destructive effects, sugar of ANY kind makes the blood and body tissues acid which is perfect for the development, survival and breeding of harmful germs and viruses. You need to keep your body tissues and blood alkaline so germs and viruses will not take hold and breed and result in you becoming quite sick. You can’t keep your tissue and blood alkaline if you are eating sugar of ANY kind.

Withdrawal from sugar must be done gradually while giving the body large quantities of the substances that sugar steals from body tissues.

The first step to cutting out sugar is to throw away all refined sugar and to refuse to buy any refined sugar – and to replace it with only unrefined organic sugar.
Next, if the foods you are eating and the drinks you are habitually drinking contain sugar then gradually cut down on them and switch to healthy food and drink.
If you drink 4 sodas each day, start by cutting down to 3 each day for a few days and then to 2 each day – then to one and finally don’t put this liquid sugar-poison in your body at all. Cut out cookies. the same way.

Man-made artificial, chemical-sweeteners are not safe and are toxic to nerve cells and tissue cells in varying degrees, causing head aches, perception oddities and other physical problems that get worse and more permanent the longer the artificial sweeteners are used so do not switch to those.
The next step in withdrawal from sugar is to gradually replace all sugar with only pure Stevia Leaf Sweetener. Stevia is a totally natural herb with no calories and no adverse effects on the body. (A tiny amount of Stevia is needed or the sweetness is so extreme it tastes a little bitter.)

While withdrawing from sugar and afterwards the doctor or technician may require that you take generous amounts of liquid minerals, potassium tablets and liquid vitamins or other supplements.

When this happens, frequent brief awakenings can leave a person feeling excessively sleepy during the day, even though they believe they have had a full night’s sleep. The current fascination with advanced genetic and production technologies has tended to obscure the fact that biotechnology has been critical to the food industry and to human health for millennia.

Preservation techniques using live organisms (such as yeast for brewing or bacteria for yoghurt manufacture) have been around for a very long time and they show no sign of being superseded. Similarly, selective breeding of domesticated animals and plants has made them almost unrecognisable compared to the original wild types. Modern oranges have been tailored to human tastes and are quite unlike the small, very bitter native fruit.

In Australia, selective breeding of plants, cereals in particular, has been central to the food industry. One spectacular (but largely unrecognised) example is the selective breeding of cereals (especially wheat) to cope with the excessive levels of boron in large tracts of the country. Some 30 per cent of agricultural land is affected by this toxicity and the selection of resistant cultivars has given us high yields from otherwise unusable soil.

Biotechnology has helped to meet the most important driver for nutritionists: a stable and adequate food supply. Many of the new challenges in nutrition are now a result of that success – the so-called ‘diseases of affluence’.

Historically, most causes of illness and death in human society were infectious diseases, secondary to poor community and personal hygiene. These have largely disappeared through improved public health measures – water purification, sewage and waste disposal and immunisation, for example.

Inadequate intake of major nutrients (fats, protein and carbohydrates) and vitamins and minerals have also been neutralised. The problems that are prevalent in Australia and similar advanced countries are those of over-nutrition.

The data on adult and childhood obesity in Australia are well known, as are some of the consequences – diabetes and early-onset coronary heart disease. Less obvious are the high rates of colorectal cancer, which is responsible for more than 4400 deaths a year in Australia alone.

All of these conditions are expensive in terms of individual and community economic costs, as well as the personal distress they cause. Chronic conditions such as inflammatory bowel diseases are also costly. These can be managed with drugs and so become problems of long-term maintenance, rather than premature death.

In addition to direct medical costs, there are hidden imposts such as loss of productivity. These are not just problems of visibly affluent countries, they are beginning to appear in countries, historically, at low risk. Countries such as India, Malaysia and China are beginning to experience a very substantial rise in diabetes, coronary heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer. Perhaps the most spectacular of these is Japan, which has gone from very low in the international league table for colorectal cancer, to number one in little more than 20 years.

These secular trends are clear evidence that environmental factors (rather than genetics) are intimately involved in disease aetiology and thus offer an opportunity for prevention.

Prospective population surveys inform as to possible preventive strategies and prevention is cheaper and more effective than cure. In these studies, large groups of people, usually at several centres, are surveyed as to their dietary and personal habits and then followed for an extended period of time. Clinical outcomes are linked to factors that raise or lower risk.

One example is the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) in which 500,000 individuals from 10 countries have been followed for an initial period of five years. It is in the implementation of preventive measures from studies such as EPIC that advanced biotechnological techniques meet some of the important needs of nutrition research.

One of the key findings of EPIC is a dose-dependent reduction in colorectal cancer risk by dietary fibre. In general, supplements are an ineffective means of increasing population fibre intakes and raising the level of fibre in convenience foods is much more likely to succeed.

The fibre content of foods can be increased by processing, but selecting new cereal grains with higher dietary fibre is a better option. This is where there is a collision between consumer attitudes and technology. Conventional breeding achieves this goal, but it is a relatively slow process relative to gene manipulation techniques.

The modern food supply is made up largely of processed foods characterised by their rapid and complete digestibility in the human small intestine. For starch, a major nutrient in most diets, this translates to a rapid (and complete) digestion that floods the circulation with glucose, leading to a high glycaemic index (GI) and greater demand for insulin.

For both the prevention and management of diabetes, low GI has clear advantages and, through the Flagships Program, CSIRO is working to develop new cereal varieties with low GI through gene modification and conventional breeding techniques.

GI is a measure of the rate of starch digestion and controlling its extent is also important. Some starch escapes into the large bowel where the products of its fermentation by the bacteria appear to play a key role in lowering the risk of colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. This starch – resistant starch (RS) – is low in processed foods and, using gene silencing, CSIRO has generated a wheat variety high in RS. This is a clear example of the application of advanced gene technologies being used to meet a nutritional need for substantial community benefit.

This benefit is not limited to Australia and other developed countries, but also to emerging ones, where the problems are just as acute. However, it does raise one of the key issues in the adoption of new technologies: consumer acceptance.

The unmet needs are global and immediate, so speed of delivery and broad application are essential, but the well-known resistance to the technology remains.

This may be resolved through acceptance of the benefits by at-risk consumers (for example, those with diabetes) who then become users and advocates. It is also worth remembering that application of new technologies leads to new products and this innovation leads to new knowledge.

In my view, nutrition research has been, and always will be, a dynamic activity.

Dr David Topping FTSE, is a Chief Research Scientist at CSIRO Human Nutrition. His current research interest is the health potential for gut health of processed foods, particularly dietary carbohydrates (fibre, resistant starch and oligosaccharides), probiotics and dietary fats. After completing his Doctorate in Biochemistry at the University of London in 1973, Dr Topping embarked on a research career in institutions in the UK, Canada and Australia. One of his key research objects is to improve public health in Australia with respect to the major diet-related diseases by the identification and substantiation of foods with defined health benefits.
